UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) for Serial Data Communication: Design and Implementation on FPGA Platform

The Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) is a widely used hardware interface for serial communication between a computer or microcontroller and external devices. UART is often integrated into microcontrollers, microprocessors, and other embedded systems to facilitate data transmission and reception. UART is a versatile and straightforward communication interface, making it a popular choice for various embedded systems and communication scenarios. Its simplicity and widespread support in hardware and software make it a reliable and essential component of many electronic devices. The design and implementation of a UART in Verilog are demonstrated in this work. The transmitter, receiver, FIFO buffer, and baud generator sub-modules make up the top module of the top-level design, which is implemented on the FPGA. To prevent data loss, the UART Protocol was created with a FIFO (First in First out) memory buffer. Utilising Xilinx ISE 14.7, the simulation and synthesis are carried out. The Spartan-3E FPGA board has successfully verified the design. The Spartan3E FPGA's LEDs will provide output from the data that is delivered.
