Literature Review of Automatic Restoration of Arabic Diacritics

Arabic is one of the most commonly utilized languages on the internet. Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP) has advanced greatly since the 1980s. Automatic diacritization is a major field in Arabic NLP because of two reasons: the lack of diacritics in most Arabic texts, and the importance of diacritics in reading. Numerous researches and studies were carried out to come up with the most effective approach for automatic restoration of Arabic diacritics. In general, three major categories were involved: linguistic approaches, machine learning approaches and hybrid approaches. In this literature review, we present a comparison of 20 articles that tackled this topic using different techniques.
