Design of Controller Area Network (CAN) Communication for PWM Rectifier Control Hybrid Train

The Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) rectifier control system on the hybrid trains developed by UGM together with PT INKA works by relying on control from the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU). Interconnection between the HCU and PWM rectifier utilizes the Controller Area Network (CAN) communication protocol. The CAN protocol design needs to consider the conditions of the system that will implement this communication protocol, so as to establish the CAN standard to be used. In practice, the selection of the CAN specification can affect the place or destination where the CAN communication protocol is applied. Implementation of communication between the PWM rectifier system and the HCU must comply with existing communication protocol standards, thus achieving stable performance. The purpose of this study was to design a CAN communication protocol system according to the control needs of the PWM rectifier, which includes CAN standards, CAN baud rates, message periods, and message frame formats. The success of the design was tested through experimentation and validation. Results showed that data can be sent in real time using a 20-meter STP cable. The test results desain protocol CAN showed a delay error of 0.5% for a baud rate of 250 kbps and 1% for a baud rate of 500 kbps. According to calculations, the CAN bus has a bus load of 0.2%, minimizing errors on the bus. The CAN protocol was tested using CAN bus analysis and no data frame errors were found on the CAN bus, even in interference-intensive environments such as cables with a voltage of 600 VDC cable in 500 watts. All tests showed that the CAN communication protocol can function properly.
