Sustainable Illumination: Leeds City Centre’s Transition to Solar Lamp Posts

As the world shifts towards renewable energy to decrease carbon emissions, photovoltaic panels are emerging as a transformative tool, finding application even in lampposts. The function of photovoltaic is to convert solar energy into electricity. In this project, a specific technology of solar cell, called monocrystalline, is being used due to its energy efficiency within a small surface area as well as its long-life span. A lead-acid battery is included in this project to store the solar energy during the daytime. Light-emitting diode (LED) lamp type is used in this project due to its efficiency and various features of lightning. The structure of the lamppost is made of steel and designed to be robust to minor traffic conditions. The street-lighting system is designed to turn off automatically during the day and turn on during night hours with a minimal upward escape of light into the night sky. The whole project is intended to be used in Leeds City Centre in the United Kingdom.
