Numerical Simulation of the Mechanical Behavior of a Transposed Cable With the In-Plane Bending of ReBCO Tapes

The Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEHP, CAS) proposed a compact ReBCO cable (named X-cable) which is implemented by in-plane bending ReBCO tapes to realize the transposition, and successfully fabricated a 10 m length prototype cable. The study on the mechanical properties of the cable is of great significance to its engineering application. Based on the finite element model, the stress-strain state of cable under different loads has been analyzed, which are used to predict the critical current performance of superconducting tapes in cable. This paper focuses on the possible failure mechanism of the X-cable under bending and transverse loads. Based on the established model, the critical bending radius of the x-cable is determined to be 20 mm. We analyzed the critical pressure and shear stress of the cable under lateral load, considering two possible scenarios that may occur during the manufacturing process. The above results can serve as a valuable reference for subsequent design of magnets and winding of coils.
