Nudging Drivers Towards Utilizing Driver Tracking: Application of Behavioral Interventions Architecture

Implementing driver tracking has the potential to elevate driving proficiency and mitigate traffic accidents. Nudging drivers to embrace driver tracking holds substantial potential for advancing road safety. The nudge approach has gained traction due to its capacity to shape environmental variables and guide individuals towards specific decisions without compulsoriness. This study seeks to analyze the influence of nudge approach on the willingness of drivers from various age groups to utilize driver tracking. A survey was conducted in Japan in 2020, gathering responses from 1054 participants. Employing the PLS-SEM model and multigroup analysis, the outcomes unveil the subsequent insights: (1) nudge approaches like natural consequences, behavioral comparison, shaping knowledge, covert learning, and identity all yield a positive impact on a driver's readiness to adopt driver tracking; (2) the employment of the shaping knowledge nudge approach significantly heightens the probability of drivers under 50 years old embracing driver tracking; (3) the natural consequence nudge approach suits drivers above 50 years old better, whereas the covert learning nudge approach is more fitting for those under 50. These discoveries offer valuable perspectives for drivers, stakeholders, and authorities, presenting effective persuasion strategies to enrich road safety.
