Design and Simulation of Fourth Order Minimum Phase Buck Converter

The design and modelling of a novel fourth order DC-DC buck converter is proposed in this article. It exhibits better dynamic performance and a voltage gain that is similar to a conventional buck converter. The proposed converter demonstrates minimal phase response as it lacks any right half-plane (RHP) zero. Additionally, it operates in a non-inverting configuration, where the output polarity remains unchanged with the input polarity. Both input and output share a common ground. Through steady-state analysis and state-space analysis, expressions for voltage gain and the design parameters of the converter elements are obtained. A PID controller is introduced to improve load voltage stability. Its performance and effectiveness are evaluated through simulations carried out in MATLAB Simulink. The test circuit is designed for 48 to 12 V, 75 W power rating in order to evaluate its effectiveness, stability and dynamic behavior.
