E-Bike Controller: Modelling and Simulation of Hysteresis Current Control based BLDC Drive

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are an integral part of present-day transportation. Electric bikes (E-bikes) play an important role in the urban mobility system as it reduces traffic congestion and saves time. With the adoption of two-wheeler E-bikes, the emissions, noise, and cost of maintenance are reduced. Features like riding modes and regenerative braking are a requisite of an e-bike controller to allow users to drive it at their convenience. A novel E-bike controller is developed with different riding-modes under motoring and regenerative braking using a modified hysteresis current control technique. The commutation ripple is reduced by using a constant hysteresis band and by controlling the slope of the reference phase current. A study of variation in hysteresis bandwidth for different loading of the motor at variable speeds is presented. The designed and developed controller automatically changes from motoring to soft regenerative braking when the user cuts off the throttle. Inbuilt overspeed and overcurrent controllers are present to regulate it. The E-bike controller is developed and simulated using the MATLAB/SIMULINK software package. The system efficiency and performance of the proposed controller are presented and analyzed.
