FireWatch: LoRa-Connected Fire Detection and Monitoring System

Internet of Things (IoT)-based solutions to meet societal issues have increased in recent years. Effective smart fire detection systems are required to ensure the safety of mankind. Sensing, Processing, Communication, Cloud storage, and data analytics are the five major components required to realize an efficient IoT application. The reliability of the application mainly depends on the communication module, as the channel characteristics in which the data is exchanged between transmitter and receiver can be influenced by fading. LoRa (Long-Range) is an upcoming technology that supports long-range communication with a maximum of 15km between the transmitter and the LoRa Gateway. In this research, this technology is adopted to design an IoT-enabled fire detection system. The developed system employs a LoRa transceiver module, an Arduino processor module, a LoRa gateway, flame sensors, and DHT11 temperature and humidity sensors. DHT11 sensors assess the ambient temperature and humidity; flame sensors detect the presence of flames. The sensory data are processed and transferred to The Things Network (TTN) cloud platform through a LoRa gateway. Further, to monitor real-time data, generate alerts, and execute predictions, Ubidots is used.
