Real-time IoT-based Power Quality Event Monitoring System for Smart Grid Application

This paper proposes a low cost solution for monitoring of power quality disturbances like sag, swell, and frequency deviation. In a smart grid system, the power quality parameters should be in the limit as per the IEEE C37.118 standard. In the era of Industry 4.0, a more sophisticated power quality monitoring system is required. An Internet of Things (IoT) based monitoring system is more reliable and also widely acceptable in the industrial sector. Most of the existing IoT power quality event monitoring systems look costly. Storage of huge data is also a big challenge. In this paper, real-time power quality events are generated by using an AC programmable power supply. A low cost micro-controller is used to process the sensed real-time voltage and current. By using suitable algorithms different parameters like sag, swell, and frequency are measured. If any such events and deviation of frequency are found and the detailed event is communicated to the control station by using the Firebase cloud system and a message will be sent to the control station incharge. Such that some suitable preventive measures can be taken.
