Dynamic Optimization of Capacitor Placement in Distribution Networks: An Adaptive PSO Approach

Conventional approaches for placement of capacitors often overlook the dynamic loading conditions experienced by distribution networks, leading to suboptimal results. To address this limitation, this research paper presents an adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm that incorporates loading conditions for enhanced capacitor placement and loss minimization. The proposed adaptive PSO algorithm is tested on the standard IEEE 33 bus system, serving as representative benchmarks for distribution networks. The algorithm aims to optimize the placement of capacitors in a manner that minimizes both real and reactive power losses, thereby maximizing the system’s efficiency and reliability. A comparative analysis is conducted between the results obtained with and without the proposed capacitor placement strategy.
