Nonlinear control via Backstepping for five-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator-based wind generation system

This paper presents a design for one of the nonlinear control techniques for wind-generation system (WGS) connected to the distribution grid, as this system is based on a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). To achieve the connection between the generation system and the grid we use two converters that are installed consecutive and a capacitor acting as a DC link between them. The main objective of this work is to apply the backstepping control (BSC) strategy to this system to improve wind power extraction and maintain the performance stability of the generator under variable wind speed. The main contribution of this paper is the comparison of two nonlinear control technologies, second order sliding mode (SOSMC) and backstepping (BSC), where SOSMC is characterized by a rapid dynamic response and insensitivity to parameter changes, concerning BSC is designed based on the law for Lyapunov that provides better stability to the system with stable performance. In order to verify the performance of the proposed control strategy, we use Matlab simulation software, where the simulation results show a distinct performance of this technique.
