Energy Control in Smart-Grid Powered Edge Computing Systems with Massive Connectivity

A novel smart grid-powered communication system is presented to minimize energy costs for edge computing servers and their connected devices and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy. An online joint optimization approach is developed to coordinate renewable energy-powered edge servers, the energy generation of different renewable sources, and energy storage charging/discharging processes to effectively minimize the system energy costs. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and dual decomposition are employed to implement the online optimization, resulting in reduced network complexity and preserving user privacy. Simulation results demonstrate the merit of the proposed approach in the utilization efficiency of renewable energy for edge computing systems.
