Design and Performance of a Compact Circular Patch Antenna with Metasurface Superstrate for Fifth Generation Application

This paper proposes a compact circular microstrip patch antenna for fifth-generation (5G) applications. Patch antenna is known for its narrow bandwidth and low gain. This work proposes slotted and parasitic elements with metasurface superstrate. The method is implemented to overcome the challenges in bandwidth and gain with a smaller patch antenna. A periodic arrangement of twisted U-shaped unit cells is introduced by constructing the metasurface on top of an FR4 dielectric and implemented as the superstrate to the modified compact circular patch antenna. The antenna is designed and simulated using CST software. It shows that the antenna is well matched at 3.5 GHz band for 5G FR1 band with a smaller dimension of the antenna. The gain is improved by 40% with the metasurface superstrate.
