Development of Digital Diode Driver For Modern Pentathlon Laser Pistols

In this paper a design for a laser diode driver circuit is presented. The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) has replaced the air pistol with laser pistol for shooting and has established strict regulations regarding laser pistols. The investigation on laser diode temperature dependence is also detailed in the paper. The laser diode driver is low-cost, low-power and compact solution, which is capable to drive the laser diode in accordance with the requirements of the UIPM regulation. Following the discussion of laser diode characteristics, the circuit design is shown in the paper. Prototypes are constructed and tested in real environment, demonstrating the ability of the driver to meet the requirements.
