Evaluation of Multiple Scheduling Methods to Reduce Lag Time in Division-based Broadcasting System

With the spread of multimedia broadcasting, attention has focused on technologies for broadcasting continuous media data such as audio and video. In broadcasting, many clients can receive data at a fixed bandwidth, but these clients must tolerate a certain lag time between the request to receive data and the start of playback. In order to reduce this lag time, division-based broadcasting, in which data is divided into several segments and delivered over several channels, has been studied. In addition, many scheduling methods have been proposed to set the delivery timing of segments in division-based broadcasting. In this paper, we propose a new implementation of a division-based broadcasting system for video data in which multiple scheduling methods can be introduced, and we evaluate each scheduling method to reduce the lag time. The proposed system can set the split ratio of segments for each scheduling method according to the delivery conditions, such as the available bandwidth and the number of channels. We introduce several scheduling methods in the proposed system and compare and evaluate their performances as a way to reduce lag times in an actual delivery environment.
