Numerical Study of Foam-Filled Honeycomb Sandwich Structures Subjected to Underwater Explosion Shock Wave

Underwater explosions can cause serious damage to structures, which is mainly caused by shock wave action. Composite sandwich structure is a special structure of composite materials. Honeycomb sandwich structure has the advantages of sound absorption, light weight, optimal specific stiffness and specific strength, so it is widely used in aerospace, ships and public facilities. The foam material can effectively absorb the impact energy, but the texture is too soft and the strength is not enough. It can be combined into a new composite material as the filler of the honeycomb sandwich structure, so that it has the buffering performance of the foam and the strength of the honeycomb structure. Based on LS-DYNA, finite element models of different honeycomb sandwich structures with or without foam filling are established in this paper, and the propagation characteristics of underwater explosion shock wave, structural deformation and energy absorption characteristics are analyzed, which provides a reference for the design of Marine sandwich structures and ship protective structures. The results show that the energy absorption characteristics of the similar square honeycomb sandwich structure is slightly better than that of the hexagonal honeycomb sandwich structure, and the foam filled honeycomb sandwich structure has better anti-knock performance, which proves that the foam filled honeycomb sandwich structure has good energy absorption characteristics.
