Automatic and Realistic Traffic Generation In A Cyber Range

Cyber attacks pose daily threats to industries, governments, and public services, and their frequency and impact continue to grow as our world becomes increasingly digital. One effective tool to combat these threats is using a cyber range, which emulates a whole network, including every organization’s computer, server, and router. In this work, we have developed a crisis management exercise that involves organizations undergoing simulated cyberattacks. The exercise aims to train cybersecurity professionals in decision-making. It consists of both a tactical layer, which simulates the network-level response to the attack, and a strategic layer, which addresses big-picture issues such as client relations, police involvement, and media management. To ensure the realism of the exercise, we have created and tested realistic traffic generators that emulate the type of network traffic generated by real-world users. We evaluated the effectiveness of these generators within the cyber range and assessed their feasibility and employability in real-world situations.
