Development of a low-cost Internet of Things architecture for energy and environment monitoring in a University Campus

This article outlines the development of a measurement platform designed to enable real-time monitoring of both electrical parameters (such as voltage, current, and power) and environmental conditions (such as humidity and temperature) within a University Campus. A University Campus consists of various buildings with different power consumption profiles, including classrooms, offices, laboratories, residences, and restaurants. The measurement platform is designed to be modular and relies on data gathered from IoT sensors that are capable of communicating with the server using the TCP/IP protocol stack. The work described in this article was executed in two primary stages: first, the establishment of an IoT architecture for data collection and storage, followed by real-time monitoring to visualize the evolution of energy and environmental indicators; second, the installation of a set of low-cost communicating sensors. The results of this study suggest that the measurement platform has the potential to significantly enhance the management and optimization of energy consumption within the University Campus, and could be implemented in other similar settings as well.
