Comparative Analysis of Conventional and Hybrid Solid State Transformer

The solid-state transformer is a high-frequency, power electronics-based switching device that is not exactly a substitute for the conventional transformer. Instead, it is a multi-purpose device that offers optimized functionalities. Over the past few decades, various topologies based on SST have been studied, and the benefits presented by the use of these in DC microgrids have been sufficient to stimulate interest in this equipment. Besides factors such as galvanic isolation and voltage level control, it allows the integration of DC microgrids with AC grids. In this article, a topology is presented in which the solid-state transformer is used in parallel with the conventional transformer, constituting a hybrid topology that combines the benefits of both technologies. Conceptually, its results will be compared to the conventional SST.
