Direct PV Array Connection With Variable Speed Drive and MPPT Control Strategy

This paper introduces a variable speed drive (VSD) powered by solar panels that offers high efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The key feature of this system is the direct connection of the photovoltaic (PV) array to the drive, eliminating the need for the DC-DC converter. This direct connection simplifies the system architecture, reduces losses, and improves overall performance. The system employs an inverter to control an asynchronous motor, which can be utilized for various applications. In this study, we specifically focus on the pumping application, which is crucial in isolated areas where PV systems are commonly used for water pumping. By utilizing the asynchronous motor, economic control law and eliminating the DC-DC converter, the system achieves increased efficiency and reduced costs, making it a viable solution for remote locations. To track the maximum power available, an MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) algorithm is employed. The algorithm utilizes drive measurements to track and extract the maximum power from the PV array. The used strategy is based on PI controller to regulate the DC bus voltage by changing the motor speed reference. The proposed system and control strategy are validated through simulations and experimentation.
