Control Strategy for Allowing Bidirectional Current Converter Operates with Natural Transition Between Buck and Boost Modes

This paper presents an alternative nonlinear controller for a bidirectional current converter integrated with a motor. The bidirectional current converter has high nonlinear dynamics which difficult the this converter application in a satisfactory way. Therefore, with the proposed control, evaluating the converter mode of operation, Buck or Boost, and consequently the induction current direction, is unnecessary. The proposed control leaves the system free to reach the current direction naturally. In this paper, the converter usually operates as Boost and, when it is needed, it changes naturally the operation mode to Buck. This application is more critical to the converter control, due to the more nonlinear characteristics of the Boost mode. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed approach.
