Optimisation of energy storage systems for hydrogen production and stable energy supply

This work analyses a system of energy storage and hydrogen production designed to operate in the emerging conditions in which energy generation is dominated by renewables. Under these conditions, static production costs tend to become meaningless and be replaced by the corresponding dynamic values. The system is modelled with generic storage, generation and electrolyser components, connected to the national energy grid. Energy may be sold either to the grid at the spot price or converted to hydrogen and sold at a given price. Profit optimisation is performed through a linear optimisation program for storage systems and electrolysers governed by different characteristics. The presented analysis is conceptual, does not consider the cost of investment and is not intended to assess economic viability of any specific project.
