Expanding Power System Benchmark Models to Support Real-time Simulations

Power grids are among the largest and most complex infrastructures requiring continuous development of new methods and tools to ensure stable and reliable operation. To verify and validate the proper implementation of these applications, and to facilitate comparisons and evaluations, benchmark models are generally used. These test systems are adapted for multiple software and platforms in order to increase simulation reliability. This work expands, tests and cross-verifies a commonly used benchmark model, the Simplified Australian 14-Generator power system, for OPAL-RT’s HYPERSIM real-time simulator. The developed model is tested and benchmarked against PSS/E, illustrating the increased level of detail obtained in the EMT domain. Furthermore, the model is cross-verified against the RTDS benchmark model, validating its implementation and expanding its availability across multiple platforms, increasing use and reach of the model. The developed model enables future research pathways, especially towards the more extensive use of real-time simulation applications.
