Simplified Electrical Modeling of an Alkaline Electrolyzer for Application in Simulations with Power Converters

The behavior of electrolyzers is intrinsically gov-erned by complex physical principles. From an electrical point of view, these electrolyzers can be defined as a circuit, where each component contributes to its overall functioning. The objective of this work is to simplify this electrical model. This simplification is based on an empirical study of mathematical modeling techniques. The initial purpose is to obtain a simplified equivalent circuit that faithfully captures the linear behavior of the alkaline electrolyzer. In this equivalent circuit, the alkaline electrolyzer can be represented as a combination of a voltage source in series with a resistor. This result is obtained through the nominal operating point of the electrolyzer. By employing this simplified model, it becomes feasible to incorporate the alkaline electrolyzer in electrical simulations together with power converters. This simplification paves the way for more efficient and accurate simulations.
