Optimal Grid Sections for a Temporary Emergency Power Supply Operating in Islanded Grid Mode

Due to the high dependence of today’s society on an uninterrupted electric power supply, there is a strong demand for a resilient electric power system and emergency power supply concepts. Here, one discussed option is providing an emergency power supply by operating grid sections of the existing distribution grid in a temporary islanded grid mode. However, due to the scarcity of large-scale regional widespread power outages, the resulting costs for implementing such concepts should be in a justifiable ratio to the achievable added value by providing the emergency power supply. This paper introduces a multi-objective optimization modelling approach that enables local grid operators, authorities, or decision makers to identify grid sections in the existing distribution grid that show a superior potential for providing a temporary emergency power supply by islanded grid sections. The method is modular structured and easy adjustable to individual needs and local requirements. The model is applied to an exemplary medium voltage grid area in Northern Germany.
