On the Estimation of the Magnetic Behavior of Sendust Cores Under Different DC-Bias Conditions

This paper introduces a novel method for estimating core losses in inductors employed as filters in DC-DC converters. Drawing upon readily available data commonly provided by core manufacturers, the proposed approach incorporates nonlinear core behavior without necessitating additional empirical results. In greater detail, the approach outlined in this paper leverages the established concept of complex magnetic permeability to offer an enhanced analysis method, which can be viewed as an extension of conventional modeling techniques. Information pertaining to magnetic behavior and core losses, sourced from data sheets or technical documents, serves as the basis for determining the values of the complex permeability components. Subsequently, the estimation of core losses can be achieved by considering both the real and imaginary permeability values under specific operating conditions. As will be explained, only the imaginary permeability component is directly linked to core loss. However, it is essential to note that alterations in the real permeability value also entail adjustments to the operating conditions, which must be taken into account during the loss estimation. Experimental evidence is provided to assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
