A Modeling Approach for MVDC Grid Planning and Evaluation of the Design Parameters

The paper presents a modeling approach for medium-voltage dc grid planning and its application to an example grid connecting a data center, climatization facilities, photovoltaic generation, and electric vehicle charging. The approach is used to assess the system’s efficiency and installed nominal power. Through application to the example grid, the impact of different design choices is demonstrated. The evaluation shows that silicon carbide semiconductor switches and active front ends operating with a power-flow control algorithm can improve system efficiency and reduce the nominal power required for component design.
