Power Flow Analysis of a Multifunctional iUPQC Utility Interface with Storage System for Microgrids

This paper presents an analysis of the power flow of a multifunctional dual unified power quality conditioner (iUPQC) utility interface when using an energy storage system connected to its bus. The analysis of the power flow is dedicated to the operation of iUPQC compensating not only the disturbances at the loads on microgrid side but also regulating the RMS voltage at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) by providing active and reactive power to the grid, considering a bidirectional storage system connected to the DC bus. The storage system connected to the DC bus can either store energy when the microgrid is generating more power than the microgrid is consuming or supply the microgrid loads, making it so the microgrid drains less energy from the grid. Equations were developed and validated through numerical simulations to understand how to properly project an iUPQC based on the power flowing through its components.
