Comparative Study of SynRM and PMSM Efficiency in a Air-to-Water chiller using Variable Speed Drive

The study proposes a variable-speed driven chiller system to study the contribution of efficiency of Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRM) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) on a Variable speed chiller Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). The research compares the performance of SynRM and PMSM under diverse operating conditions and load profiles, utilizing a comprehensive simulation model incorporating their distinctive characteristics and control strategies. Key performance indicators (KPIs) such as energy usage, torque response, and system efficiency are evaluated. The simulation results authenticate the potential for energy saving and sustainable operation of each motor type in the context of Variable Speed Drive (VSD) chiller applications. Moreover, the impact of various operating conditions on the respective motor’s efficiency, as well as the effects of load and environmental changes, are investigated. The study aids chiller system manufacturers and designers in making informed decisions regarding the most efficient motor technology that can meet cooling requirements while minimizing energy consumption.
