Control of Dissolved Oxygen Concentration in Waste-Water Treatment Plants Using Fuzzy Logic Control

The Wastewater Treatment Process (WWTP) involves intricate biochemical reaction processes and it is challenging to control because of its nonlinear nature. This study compares a Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) approach to Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller for maintaining effluent quality. Simulation work was conducted using MATLAB's Benchmark Simulation Model no. 1 (BSM1) framework. Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) effectively handles system variations and provides lower AE consumption compared to PID controlled systems. Also FLC can self-adapt the aeration supply to accommodate different influent wastewater characteristics described by three different weather conditions. The comparison results indicate that FLC can effectively control the wastewater treatment process, resulting in improved Effluent Quality Index (EQI) and reduced Aeration Energy (AE) consumption.
