Impact of Commercial EV Loads on the Power Grid

Numerous studies have investigated the effects of commuter electric vehicles (EVs) charging loads on the power grid. However, with the increasing adoption of commercial EVs in the vehicle transportation sector, the health of the power distribution grid is at risk from megawatt-level EV loads. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel methodology to develop commercial EV load profiles with efficiency contingency (EC) factors for a 24-hour EV power flow load injection simulation analysis within an electric power grid. The commercial EV load profiles are determined using a deterministic approach, which utilizes commercial EV model characteristics, Federal Motor Safety Carrier Administration (FMSCA) hours of service (HOS) regulations, and average commercial EV operating schedules. The study also analyzes the convolution and implementation of dispersed charging demand response (DR) for the mitigation impact of commercial EV loads on the power distribution grid.
