Testing of New Composite Polymer Insulators According to IEC 62217. Evaluation of the Results from a Scientific Viewpoint

This publication presents a design test of a type of long-rod composite polymer insulator intended to be used in railway overhead power lines. Tests are done according to IEC 62217, clause 9.2.7.4 Dry power frequency voltage test. The tested insulators are pre-stressed by boiling in salt solution according to the requirements of the standard. An evaluation of the obtained results from a scientific viewpoint is made. It was concluded that: organization of the thermal measurements need to be done with respect of the construction of the insulators; thermal cameras are useful aids, standard does not cover the time frame in which the measurements must be done.
