Validating a MRAS based Rotor Time Constant Adaptation in 3L SiC Inverter fed IM Drive Over Wide Switching Frequencies

The successful and accurate implementation of field-oriented control (FOC) on induction motor (IM) requires motor parameters estimation, especially the rotor time constant and their online adaption since they vary due to the temperature and adverse effects of switching frequency. Therefore, there are opportunities for in-depth assessment, investigation, and increasing the applicability and convenience of the model reference adaptive-based (MRAS) technique, particularly with varying switching frequencies. Exploring various approaches, a simple method is selected that uses the model of IM with and without rotor time constant and compares them to acquire accurate rotor time constant information eventually. The comprehensive analysis, simulations, and experimental findings on a laboratory-developed three-level SiC-based NPC converter supplying the IM verify the efficacy of these proposed methodologies. The experiments are conducted on a 2.2 kW IM drive for a wide range of switching frequencies.
