Characteristic Stability Analysis of Axial Flux Motors in Comparison with Radial Flux Motors Subjected to EV Application

In an Electric Vehicle (EV) architecture, the significant role of propulsion is due to the presence of a motor. Over the years different types of motors were supporting the propulsion system of the EV in various configurations. However, in flux flow point Radial Flux Permanent Magnet Motor (RFPMM) was given more priority than AFPMM due to its sustainability towards design and construction. However, Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motor (AFPMM) has higher speed, torque, and efficiency than RFPMM due to its shorter flux path and absence of end turn winding. Hence, this project aims to perform a suitability analysis of an AFPMM as a hub motor/in-wheel motor to replace the RFPMM subjected to EV application. The design of AFPMM with topologies that have a one-rotor, one-stator configuration is considered. In this research, for required performance parameters the physical dimensions of an AFPMM are derived through systematic analytical equations. Furthermore, the design is carried out on a multi-physics tool to analyze the electromagnetic behavior of the model. To validate the designed model and to compare the characteristics, a prototype of RFPMM with similar output performance parameters is selected. The running parameters are tested to the correctness of the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (OEM) recommended output quantities. Through reverse engineering, the design dimensions are obtained and the electromagnetic behavior is analyzed using a multi-physics tool. Furthermore, from the arrived performance characteristics of RFPMM, the design dimensions of AFPMM are derived from sizing equations and assumed design variables. The suitability analysis subjected to EV behavior is analyzed and the most appropriate motor for a sustainable run of electric vehicles is examined.
