Design and Development of Prosthetic Piezoelectric Energy Harvester

Advancements in recent years have made implantable medical electronics (IMEs) crucial for improving patients’ lives and extending their longevity. However, a significant challenge in their development is prolonging the lifespan of these devices. Wearable devices, typically powered by chemical-cell batteries, face limitations due to the need for frequent replacement or recharging, which affects their overall acceptance. Although prosthetic limbs have shown improvements in effectiveness, tactile qualities, and weight, their appeal is diminished by the long charging time required. To address these issues, the concept of a prosthetic piezoelectric energy harvester has emerged as an innovative solution to enhance the functionality and energy efficiency of prosthetic devices. This innovative device aims to capture the mechanical energy generated by the user’s movements and convert it into electrical energy, which can be utilized to power the prosthetic device. This involves designing and optimizing the energy harvester for various applications, including prosthetic legs, arms, ankles, and knees. To minimize downtime and enhance reliability, the study aims to incorporate a portable power source within the prosthetic arm. One promising approach for generating electricity from body motions is through piezoelectric energy harvesting, which offers potential and effectiveness in powering wearable technology.
