Influence of Magnetizing Inductance and Dead Time in the Performance of Half-Bridge LLC Resonant Converter

Dead time is essential to ensure the safe operation of devices in a half-bridge LLC resonant converter and achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS). ZVS helps to reduce switching loss and EMI issues. Also, in the literature, it is reported that there is a tradeoff between magnetizing inductance and dead time to achieve ZVS. But no works have been reported so far in discussing the effect of large magnetizing inductance and large dead time on the performance of the half-bridge LLC resonant converter. Hence, this paper discusses the miller turn ON of the switches due to large magnetizing inductance and large dead time for half-bridge LLC resonant converter. The MosFET characteristics, miller turn ON, and the relationship between dead time and magnetizing inductance is reported in this paper. The theory is validated using simulation results obtained from LTspice and hardware results from an experimental setup of 160W.
