Closed Loop Control of Isolated SEPIC Converter for EV Charging

Electric vehicles (EVs) have advanced significantly in recent years to reduce pollution and energy crisis problems. However, the need for an efficient charging system is limiting the development of EVs. It is essential to use the proper DC-DC converter topology for EV battery charging. The battery life and capacity must be maximized while designing the power converter. As a result, the power converter used to charge an EV’s battery must have high efficiency. In this paper isolated Single-Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) is used for battery charging. Due to inherent input inductance, the SEPIC converter shows tremendous promise in EV charging applications. In addition to this study, the fundamental design, modeling, and close-loop operation of the converter are presented. The design approaches and design factors of the prototype of the converter of power rating 1.5-kW are discussed. In this study, the developed system is tested on software and hardware prototypes. MATLAB/Simulink software is used to simulate the 1.5-kW prototype. To validate the design, a 25W laboratory prototype is tested, and experimental results in different modes of operation are presented.
