Performance Analysis of Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Microgrid based on Droop and VSG-Based Control

Parallel connection of inverters has gained popularity due to the rise in inverter-based distributed generation (DG). For proportional power sharing, droop control has been popular for over a decade. The idea of a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG), which imitates the characteristics of a synchronous generator, has emerged. Inverters are typically connected in parallel to share power proportionally. Most of the research in parallel inverter system is based on homogeneously controlled sources. The system can also operate with a combination of droop controlled and virtual synchronous generator control, making it heterogeneous. This paper analyzes the isotropic nature of VSG and droop control by correlating the parameters used in these control strategies. Further, the frequency deviation in microgrid systems with heterogeneous control is compared with droop control alone. Simulation studies are carried out to support the claims.
