Model and Analysis of the Maximum Upstream Latency of a Deterministic Industrial PON System Applying Frame-Based Dense Burst Allocation Method

Compared to copper wire-based network solutions, the passive optical network (PON) system offers advantages such as large bandwidth, long transmission distance, low deployment cost, and long fiber lifespan. However, the inherent Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) mechanism used in the upstream direction makes the latency of the PON system far from perfect. Novel techniques are introduced to improve the latency performance, among which, the Frame-based Dense Burst Allocation method has been proven to be effective. However, in-depth research on this Frame-based Dense Burst Allocation method is still missing. In this paper, we propose an analytical model of the maximum upstream latency for the PON system applying the Frame-based Dense Burst Allocation method. The experimental results agree with the theoretical prediction derived from our model.
