Evaluation of Damper Winding Application in a PMSM Under Different Operating Conditions

This article investigates noise and vibrations of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) integrated with a damper system under different load conditions. The damper system consisting of a three-phase auxiliary winding and external capacitors is designed to reduce electromagnetic noise and vibrations in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSMs). Capacitors are used to short-circuit a three-phase damper winding that is wound into the same slots as the stator winding. The effectiveness of the damper system in reducing noise and vibration is analyzed, and its impact is practically studied in this article. First, electromagnetic excitation due to pulsewidth modulation (PWM) supplies and corresponding noise and vibrations in PMSMs are presented. Then, the principle and installation of the damper system are explained in detail. The sideband harmonic reduction effect in a studied machine is predicted by numerical simulations. To verify the performance of the damper system to reduce noise and vibration and its impact under various operating conditions, experimental validation is performed on a load test bench. Overall, the damper system can effectively reduce electromagnetic noise and vibrations, but it needs to explore suitable operating conditions to minimize its negative effects.
