Motor Vehicle Challenge 2023: The Winning Multi-physical Energy Management Algorithm

A rule-based energy management algorithm for multi-energy source and multi-motor electric vehicles is pre-sented. The designed solution is implemented for a vehicle with two in-wheel electric motors installed in the rear axle and one central front motor. The energy needed to power the vehicle is provided by a hybrid energy storage system with hydrogen fuel cell and battery pack. Energy consumption, battery degradation, safety constraints and derating of the vehicle performance are the main metrics of the given cost function to be minimized. The algorithm is validated with an extensive simulation stage. Different driving cycles containing typical operating conditions of the vehicle are used. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is further corroborated by winning the IEEE Motor Vehicle Challenge 2023.
