An Integrated Platform for the Simulation of Multimodal Trains on Discontinuosly Electrified Lines

Both battery operated and hybrid fuel cells rolling stock offer the possibility of a catenary free propulsion. However, both technologies still impose several performance limits with respect to the current collection from an electrified line. A discontinuous current collection over mixed lines alternating electrified sections with not electrified ones or with static recharge stations should be a reasonable solution in terms of cost, maintenance, and overall sustainability of the system. In this work, authors introduce a configurable model of rolling stock that can be customized to simulate different multi-modal solutions. To demonstrate the extreme flexibility of the proposed approach a benchmark test case evaluating the opportunity of a parking/opportunity recharge of the batteries of a hybrid fuel cell train is introduced.
