Generic Modeling Approach for FPGA-Based Real-Time Simulations of Electric Machines

In the automotive industry, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is a well-established method for testing and validating electronic control units of electric drives. Due to the high diversity of electric machine types and highly sophisticated controllers, the requirements on the real-time models regarding the level of detail and the configurability in terms of the machine type are increasing. To meet these requirements a new concept called the Generic Drive Model (GDM) was developed, which is based on a generic modeling approach capable of providing real-time models of a high variance of electric machines with a high level of detail for FPGA-based simulations. This contribution contains the generic equations for modeling the electric machines as well as the basics of its corresponding FPGA implementation. As an example, for the modeling approach, the results of a real-time simulation of a six-phase separately excited synchronous machine (SESM) are presented.
