Effectiveness Analysis of Using an Electric Drive with a Magnetic Gearbox for Cooling Tower Fan

The article analyzes the effectiveness of the use of a magnetic gearbox for the electric drive of a cooling tower fan. The technical feasibility of creating a cooling tower fan gear motor, which consists of an electric motor with permanent magnets and a magnetic gearbox, is shown. Numerical studies of the characteristics of a magnetic gearbox and an electric motor with permanent magnets have been carried out with varying sizes and configurations of the magnetic system. The considered scheme of the electric drive with a magnetic gear allows the use of an electric motor with a high rotation speed, which ensures high drive efficiency with small dimensions and weight. A comparison is made between an electric drive with a magnetic gearbox and with asynchronous and low-speed synchronous permanent magnet electric motors of cooling tower fans, which are currently widely used. The advantage of an electric drive with a magnetic gearbox is shown. The calculation of the characteristics of the investigated electric motors and magnetic gears were carried out in the Simcenter MotorSolve software package.
