Carbon Emission Monitoring for Telco Cloud

Recently, global data centers have been rapidly developing, as well as accommodating massive computing servers and onboarding significant amounts of virtual resources, including virtual data centers, virtual private networks, virtual machines, and virtual network functions. In telecom data centers, virtual machines are the major resources to provide telecom computing services. The power consumption of physical resources has been a focus of energy management since the early stage, with considerable monitoring and energy-saving technologies developed. However, under global sustainable development, improving the utilization of physical resources and managing the power consumption of virtual resources has become even more critical with the effect of virtualization and containerization. Therefore, we propose the estimate the power consumption of physical and virtual resources by monitoring the resources of public and private clouds and using statistical models. We also integrate carbon emissions information from electricity maps to track the carbon footprint of data centers in different regions. In the future, energy-saving control technologies will be developed based on carbon emissions information, such as equipment frequency reduction, automatic migration of virtual resources, and temperature control.
