Optimal Joint Capacity Planning for Electricity Storage and Water Storage

With the rapid development of renewable energy, the power system is in urgent need of finding more flexibility resources to help incorporate the abundant renewable energy. The integrated electrical-water system has proved to be an effective means for renewable energy accommodation. The electricity storage and water storage are crucial components that determine the energy flexibility of integrated electrical-water system. Currently, there is no research on the joint planning of these two components. This paper proposes a two-stage capacity planning model for the electricity and water storage. The first stage aims at generating the flexibility requirement scenarios and the second stage optimizes the capacity of electricity and water storage. The dynamic water transmission model and water quality model are considered in the second stage. Case study results show that the proposed model can reduce the amount of renewable energy curtailment greatly. Good water quality can also be maintained.
