A Portable Fully Digital Dosimeter for Pulsed Radiation Fields

Realtime sampling of pulses generated in radiation detectors is a standard technology in stationary experiments for high energy and nuclear physics. Additionally, mobile applications and especially dosimetry can benefit from the data conserved in such technology. The full digitalization of a pulse of an organic scintillator conserves a large amount of information. In the current work, it is shown how realtime analyses of sampled pulses contribute to advanced and accurate dosimetry. Especially in pulsed radiation fields the time structure can be conserved and the time structure can be used to identify time modulated radiation sources. Additionally, a tissue equivalent detector material assures a proper dose weighting in pile-up situations. A portable device is presented which measures ambient as well as directional dose for photons in the range from 15 keV to 1.3 MeV and has shown an accuracy of better than 5 % in pulsed reference x-ray fields at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Brunswick, Germany. Details of the sampling and analysis algorithms are presented and how conservation of time information can be exploited.
