Derivation Methodology of TPCs With All Bidirectional Inductively Interfaced Ports Suitable for Solar Photovoltaic Applications

The proliferation of renewable energy sources (RES) in recent decades is fueled by net-zero objectives. These RES generally need an ally, such as energy storage devices (ESD), e.g., battery and supercapacitor for reliable operation, resulting in the wide usage of multiport converters. It is well known that the performance of RES and ESD improves when they are interfaced using inductively interfaced/current ports. Further, current ports enhance the overall reliability of the system by eliminating large capacitive filtering requirements as well as the need to parallel many electrolytic capacitors. This article proposes a novel approach of merging a basic nonisolated pulsating current source cell (PCSC) with the proposed three-terminal cell to obtain a new family of three-port converters (TPCs), facilitating all bidirectional current ports suitable for renewable applications. A TPC derived from buck–boost PCSC, named buck–boost three-terminal cell converter (BBTTCC), is taken as an example to validate the suitability of the proposed TPCs in renewable applications by implementing a photovoltaic (PV)-based dc system consisting of a PV panel, battery, and dc load/grid. Performance analysis of the resultant BBTTCC-based PV dc system is carried out for various operating conditions, and the same is validated using a 250-W experimental prototype.
