Comparing Prospective King AV1 Codec with Current Best Alternative HEVC in Different Applications

High Efficiency Video Coding is a mature, well known and widely supported non-free video codec first published in 2013. AOMedia Video 1 is a royalty free coding format designed for video transmissions over the Internet. It was first published in 2018 and is slowly but surely growing in popularity. My goal is to study the latest revisions of the most popular AV1 and HEVC encoders to find out which gives better compression, in what scenarios, how compute hungry an algorithm is. Key testing points are target quality (CRF and/or QP) efficiency, average perceptual video quality for bitrate, possible bitrate saving for increased encoding time, compression strength on various common resolutions, real-time encoding and how good it is, multithreading capabilities of encoders. The core quality determent metric is VMAF, which is rather popular and trustworthy in the encoding community.
